Blood Donor Program

2008 Schedule

Thank you for your interest in MetroWest Medical Center's Community Blood Donor Program.  Our mission is to maintain a safe, adequate blood supply for our community, and to be prepared for any emergency that may occur in this rapidly growing area.

Last year we were able to collect 93 % of the 6,863 units of blood products needed for our patients.   Were asking each healthy individual in each business, school and community group within the MetroWest area to donate blood.  We are very proud to say that we have over 2100 people who have donated anywhere from one pint to over twenty gallons.

The donation process:

Step 1: Mini Physical

It starts with a brief interview.  Then we check your pulse, blood pressure, temperature, and your hemoglobin is checked.

Step 2: Donate blood

Roll up your sleeve, feel a brief pinch and in fifteen minutes or less the entire donation process is over.

Step 3: Sit back and relax

Relax for a few minutes with juice, ice cream, and snacks.  Every donor receives the Power of One shirt, lunch voucher and are entered to win our month raffle.

How often can I donate?

Because your body starts to replace the blood you have given immediately after you donate, it is safe for you to donate every eight weeks, or up to five times a year. Blood has a storage life of only six weeks, so it's important for the hospital to have regular donations to ensure an adequate supply.

Are there any medicine restrictions?  Yes.

Sponsor a blood drive:

We are able to schedule a mobile drive with a sign up of at least 15 potential donors.  Drives for up to 20 donors are scheduled on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.  Groups of 20 or more may be scheduled on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday.  Many larger corporations prefer to schedule drives on 2 separate days such as a Thursday and Friday of the same week.  We will also accommodate afternoon to evening drives on Mondays or Thursdays.  We are ready and willing to do what it takes to make your drive as convenient and simple as possible.

We bring all the supplies needed for the blood donations including snacks and juice.  Each donor will be given a gift for his or her donation.  This may be a T-shirt, a hat, a tote bag or a "future blood donor" shirt for their child.  The average blood drive requires a room size of 20x20.  This room needs phone access, three tables and twelve chairs.  If you have any concerns about the viability of one of your rooms, we are happy to do an on-site visit.  Also, please know that you are welcome to visit another blood drive, to get a sense of how we run.  We know our professional staff will impress you.
