The Pediatric Department at Framingham Union Hospital is a 21-bed medical/surgical unit that focuses on providing comprehensive medical care to children from newborn to 21-years old. An affiliation with Children's Hospital in Boston means that the unit provides 24-hour coverage by residents from Children's Hospital. The residents collaborate as a team with experienced pediatric nurses and community physicians to care for children. In the event that intensive care is needed, MetroWest Medical Center works closely with Boston hospitals--primarily Children's Hospital--to determine an effective plan for care.
In addition to general pediatric care, the unit also offers the following services:
Level II Special Care Nursery To complement our newborn nursery, a Level II Special Care Nursery is available for at-risk newborns with special health needs. Overseen by a neonatologist, the team includes Children's Hospital residents, community physicians, and nurses who are skilled in high-risk infant care. Working closely with Boston hospitals, our Special Care Nursery is a resource that may serve as a transition from a Level III nursery to a Level II nursery closer to home.
Pediatric Surgery Framingham Union Hospital offers inpatient and outpatient pediatric surgery, and Leonard Morse Hospital offers outpatient pediatric surgery. A special component of the program includes Countdown to Surgery, an interactive teaching program to help prepare children and their families for surgery. Educational materials include:
- What to expect at the hospital and during surgery
- Advice for parents on helping children cope with pain, categorized for specific age groups
- Frequently asked questions
- Tour of the Operating Room and Pediatric Unit
- Follow-up call from nursing
