MetroWest Medical Center Offers Free Wireless Access
Inpatients are Invited to Use Their Laptops
Framingham & Natick, MA – May 2, 2007 –MetroWest Medical Center is pleased to announce that public wireless Internet access is now available on inpatient units. Patients and visitors at MWMC Framingham Union Hospital and Leonard Morse Hospital are now able to use their personal notebooks, laptops, and other mobile devices to access the Internet while staying in patient rooms.
MWMC inpatients are able to surf the Internet, check e-mail, and stay connected to the world outside the hospital walls – right from their hospital beds. This wireless service is especially beneficial to patients who may need to be hospitalized for an extended period of time and must have access to the Internet for personal and/or work-related reasons. MWMC plans to offer the same service in outpatient areas next year.
“The wireless network we offer to our patients and their visitors is strictly for patient use and is completely segregated from the secured clinical wireless network used by our physicians and other health professionals,” notes Andrei Soran, CEO of MetroWest Medical Center. “Patient clinical data is always kept completely secure and inaccessible from the public wireless service.”
Similar to the Internet access available at airports and other public facilities, MWMC’s inpatient wireless access is on an open and unsecured network. This means that the potential exists for any information sent or received to be intercepted. MWMC cautions users to utilize the network at their own risk and not to transmit credit card numbers or other personal information.
