    Health and wellness matters to everyone. That’s why health care and community organizations in the MetroWest region are coming together to develop a new vision of how health and wellness programs can best serve area residents, and we want you to be part of that planning. We are asking residents who live or work in the communities listed below to give us your feedback and suggestions about health services and issues in the region by completing a 10-15 minute survey by Friday, May 31, 2013. All responses are completely anonymous.

  • IMPORTANT HEALTHCARE INFORMATION REGARDING NECC

    The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) along with state and local health departments and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are investigating a multistate meningitis outbreak of fungal infections patients who have received a steroid injection of a potentially contaminated drug into the spinal area. These products were all manufactured by a local compounding facility called New England Compounding Center (NECC).

  • Sleep. It's Good For You!

    Just like eating and breathing, sleep is a necessary function that we may take for granted. And just like responses to eating and breathing, our body tells us when we don’t get enough sleep - we feel drowsy, hungrier, and may be more irritable. A lack of sleep can alter how our entire body functions and can even contribute to serious mental health conditions, like depression and schizophrenia. While everyone’s body is different, it’s good to aim for 8 hours of sleep per night. However, this is often easier said than done.

  • Make the switch to low-fat or fat-free milk

    The only thing “whole” about whole milk is a whole lot of calories, saturated fat, and cholesterol. By switching to low-fat or fat-free milk, you cut calories, fat, and cholesterol but keep the great health benefits milk has to offer. I tried a blind taste test with my family. No one could tell the difference! This shows how the mind can fool you. If you can’t see the colors of the bottle tops or labels of the different types of milk, “taste is all in the mind.”

  • Employers, finding obesity weighs on bottom lines, helps employees make healthy choices

    As part of long-term effort to address obesity and the health problems that come along with it, MetroWest Medical Center (MWMC) sponsored a 12-week program for employees on topics such as healthy eating and a team-based walking challenge, In all, 52 employees lost more than 500 pounds over the during the three months, said Diane Barnaby, health and wellness coordinator at MWMC, which employs 2,400 people in four locations.

  • MetroWest Medical Center chosen for Worksite Wellness Initiative

    The Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Working on Wellness Initiative selects public and private employers from Massachusetts to participate in a wellness initiative for 1 year. It is an evidenced based toolkit program that offers training, development, engagement, technical assistance and support to employers both, large and small, to develop an infrastructure in their organization to address the needs of employers and employees on improving the health of employees. This initiative is to help employers build both sustainable and expandable wellness initiatives to engage employees to be healthy at work and prevent chronic disease, which ultimately creates a happier, more productive workforce. There is evidence that supports that Worksite Wellness programs not only improves individual employee health but reduces sick leave absenteeism, reduces healthcare costs, reduces workers’ compensation, and produces a savings. This year MetroWest Medical Center was chosen as one of twelve companies to work with them on this program!
