The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) along with state and local health departments and the Food and DrugAdministration (FDA) are investigating a multi-state meningitis outbreak of fungal infections patients who have received a steroid injection of a potentially contaminated drug into the spinal area. These products were all manufactured by a local compounding facility called New England Compounding Center (NECC).
1. What is the medication that is causing this?
All cases are have been related to one specific steroid medication, methylprednisolone.
Please note that this drug was never purchased or used at MetroWestMedical Center on any patients.
2. Are other medications from NECC contaminated?
Other medications are under investigation but only the steroid, methylprednisolone has been associated with contamination and the fungal meningitis so far. However, because of the issues identified at NECC, the FDA along with MetroWest Medical Center is recommending as a precaution that patients who received any medication from NECC be notified and has recalled all products from NECC.
3. What does this mean to you?
For those who received a letter:
Again, since you did not receive the medication that is currently associated with the contamination we are mailing you as a precautionary measure. Should you develop any symptoms or suspicion of meningitis it is recommended that you seek medical attention with your primary physician.
For those who did not receive a letter: you were not exposed to any medication at MetroWest Medical Center purchased from NECC.
