Pelvic Floor Disorder

Urogynecology is the study and treatment of female pelvic medicine, pelvic floor reconstruction and incontinence. Urogynecologists combine expertise from both urology and gynecology — focusing on the female urinary and reproductive systems and the pelvic floor.

Women can develop pelvic floor disorders, or weakness of the pelvic muscles or tears in the pelvic connective tissue after childbirth, surgery, or for a variety of other reasons.  These issues can often lead to other medical issues, including:

  • Incontinence — 11 Million American women suffer from urinary incontinence, the leakage of small amounts of urine or frequent and sometimes uncontrollable urination.
  • Pelvic Organ Prolapse — It is estimated that 35% of women will develop pelvic organ prolapse, or dropping of pelvic organs below their normal location in their lifetime.
  • Chronic Pelvic Pain — This can cause discomfort, burning or other uncomfortable pelvic symptoms.
  • Overactive Bladder — Symptoms include the frequent need to urinate, uncomfortable bladder pressure, urge incontinence, and difficulty holding a full bladder.
  • Emptying Disorders — Some women experience difficulty urinating or moving bowels.

MetroWest Medical Center offers a personalized, comprehensive, and multidisciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating these and other pelvic floor disorders.

Treatment options include both surgical and non-surgical options, including physical therapy, in-office treatments, biofeedback and pessaries.
