Travel Medicine Program

Are you planning for international travel? If so, you may be exposed to diseases that are not common in the United States. MetroWest Medical Center’s Travel Medicine Program can make your trip more safe and enjoyable.

Travel Consultation

The Travel Medicine Program at MetroWest Medical Center provides comprehensive services including  everything from immunizations and necessary documentation to medical attention following your return home, if needed.

Our travel medicine services include personalized consultations with specialists who are experts in travel-related health issues and diseases. They can discuss health and safety concerns associated with virtually every destination in the world, and will address any concerns you have about your trip and provide you with all the information you need to make your journey a safe and healthy one.

Your pre-travel consultation will give you valuable information, and includes a personal risk assessment tailored to:

  • your medical history
  • your destination
  • the specific details of your travel itinerary

Our travel medical staff will cover everything from the beverages and foods you should avoid during your trip to how you can access medical care if you should need it while away from home.

Immunization Services

Immunizations are often either required or recommended when traveling to many foreign destinations. Some of the diseases requiring immunization or preventive measures include.

  • Yellow Fever
  • Diphtheria
  • Hepatitis A
  • Typhoid Fever
  • Meningitis
  • Malaria
  • Rabies
  • Measles

Specialized Team

Led by Dr. Thomas L. Treadwell, who is board-certified in infectious disease, our staff has extensive expertise and advanced training in tropical and infectious diseases, as well as other travel-associated health issues. These specialists are dedicated to reducing the potential health risks related to global travel, and will do everything possible to ensure that you enjoy a positive international travel experience.

Return Care

The Travel Program at MetroWest Medical Center has a long history of treating travelers who return home with travel-related illnesses. Post-travel consultations are available even if you did not visit the clinic before your trip.

Insurance Coverage

Although the Travel Program at MetroWest Medical Center accepts most healthcare plans, we recommend that you contact your insurance company prior to visiting us to determine whether your plan covers preventive services. Referrals may also be required.

Making an Appointment

Travel consultations and immunization visits are by appointment only. Every effort will be made to accommodate your schedule. Please make your first appointment with enough time to complete the immunization process, keeping in mind that some procedures must start six to eight weeks prior to travel.

Hours and Location

The Travel Medicine Program is open Monday through Friday by appointment only. We are on the ground floor of Framingham Union Hospital, in the Ambulatory Care area (to your left as you enter the lobby). For more information about the Travel Medicine Program at MetroWest Medical Center, please call (508) 383-1473.
