Geriatric Neuro-Psychiatric Treatment
Geriatric Neuro-Psychiatric Treatment Unit (GTU), Natick Campus
The GTU is a 16-bed, secure unit treating older adults who require a combination of both psychiatric and neuro-cognitive disorders treatment. Patients are followed by a physician who is board certified in Behavioral Neurology & Neuro-Psychiatry as well as Psychiatry & Neurology. To be eligible for the GTU, a patient must be 55 or older who has a Neuro-Psychiatric or Neuro-Cognitive Disorder and has neurological & psychiatric symptoms. The program offers comprehensive treatment planning for Geriatric Neuro-psychiatric illness involving Diagnostic work up including neurological, medical, neuro-psychiatric & neuro-cognitive diagnostic assessment, a bio-psycho-social model of treatment using medications, psycho-social rehabilitation, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and milieu therapy, nutritional assessment, and various cognitively stimulating group activities. Other evidence based non-medication therapy including cognitive therapy, yoga therapy & pet therapy. Included in the program are family/caregivers educational meetings with the provider to review differential diagnosis of Dementias, updates on each Neuropsychiatric conditions & treatment options and prognosis.
