Lymphedema Therapy
Lymphedema is a medical condition that may occur when regional lymph nodes are compromised due to surgery, radiation, injury, or if there is a congenital deformity within the lymphatic system. This results in an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the surrounding tissue.
There are various treatments for Lymphedema. Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is the recommended treatment and is utilized at MWMC. Lymphedema therapy consists of Manual Lymph Drainage, Compression Bandaging, Skin Care to prevent infection, and Exercise. Manual Lymph Drainage or MLD utilizes specific techniques to assist in mobilizing fluid. It is very comfortable and soothing and there is no pain involved. Following MLD, the involved limb is bandaged in minimally-elastic cotton compression bandages to prevent the re-accumulation of lymph fluid.
Along with the therapy, the patient will be instructed in a specific exercise program which is performed while wearing the bandages. Throughout the course of therapy, the patient will also be instructed in self care techniques and precautions. When treatment is completed, progress can be maintained by continued use of compression, exercise, and meticulous skin care.
