We provide a wide scope of surgical services, including inpatient, outpatient, day surgery and minimally invasive procedures, at our hospitals in Framingham and Natick. In our operating rooms, MetroWest surgeons perform minor and major procedures on patients who suffer from a variety of medical conditions. The procedures we perform require sophisticated skill and state-of-the-art technology.

In addition to our surgical specialties, we offer a number of special programs:

• Through our autotransfusion program patients can donate their own blood for use during their surgical procedure.
• Our Perioperative Music Therapy Program uses music to help reduce stress, control anxiety and pain, and enhance the healing process. Patients interested in this program can bring tapes or CDs and a headset to listen to music during and after their procedure, when appropriate.
• MetroWest’s LAR (Local Ambulatory Room) and day surgery programs allow patients to have minor surgical procedures and return home the same day.
• Through our pain management program, patients work with nurses and doctors before and after their procedure to prevent or relieve pain.

Prior to your procedure at MetroWest, you will visit our Pre-Admission Testing clinic. During your visit, you will pre-register with the hospital, be assessed by a nurse, receive educational information relevant to your procedure, interview with an anesthesiologist, and have any tests your doctor orders (EKG, X-rays, blood tests, etc.). In addition, you will receive postoperative discharge instructions to aid in your recovery, as well as information about your rights as a patient under Massachusetts law to make decisions about your medical care.

We have an extensive array or surgical specialties, including:

General Surgery
In our General Surgery program, we perform a wide variety of open and laparoscopic procedures. We perform procedures ranging from appendectomies, tonsillectomies and hernia repairs to laparoscopic cholecystectomies, laparoscopic splenectomies and laparoscopic bowel resections. Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure using an illuminated optical or fiber optic instrument inserted through the abdominal wall.

Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Surgery
Our ENT surgeons provide a wide range of services to treat ear, nose and throat problems. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), laryngectomy, laryngotomy, myringotomy, nasal/orbital fracture reconstruction, rhinoplasty, sinusoscopy, uvulopharyngopalatoplasty are among the surgical procedures we perform.

Endoscopy
Our Endoscopy suites in Framingham and Natick are staffed by gastroenterologists who perform colonoscopies, gastroscopies and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatographies (ERCP) to diagnose and treat diseases and conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, bile duct and pancreas and to screen for colorectal cancer. The majority of our procedures are done on an outpatient basis; however, some ERCP procedures require a hospital stay.

Gynecologic Surgery
Surgeons in our Gynecologic Surgery program perform a variety of procedures to treat gynecological disorders and to diagnose and treat gynecologic cancers. We perform numerous procedures, including dilatation and curettage, hysteroscopy, laparascopic tubal ligation, loop electrosurgical excision procedures (LEEP), laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH), and thermal uterine balloon therapy, as well as laser surgery

Laser Surgery
Laser surgery uses special light beams instead of instruments to perform surgical procedure. Surgeons at MetroWest use some of the most common forms of laser surgery – argon, CO2, indigo and KTP – to perform a variety of urological, gynecological, ophthalmic, dermatological and other procedures.

Neurosurgery
Our Neurosurgery Program diagnoses and treats patients with injuries to or diseases of the brain, spine or peripheral nerves. Among the procedures we perform are stereotactic brain biopsy, craniotomy, hematoma evacuation, laminectomy and neurolysis.

Ophthalmic Surgery
Our ophthalmologists perform a variety of procedures to treat diseases of the eye and to correct vision. We remove cataracts, perform corneal surgery to correct nearsightedness and farsightedness, treat retinal diseases, and perform laser vision correction to make patients less dependent on eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery
Oral-maxillofacial surgery encompasses the fields of medicine and dentistry. Our program focuses on diagnoses and treatment of diseases, trauma and genetic and developmental deformities of the mouth, jaw, neck and teeth. Our surgeons focus on treating fractures to the facial skeleton, including the maxilla (upper jaw) and mandible (lower jaw), and soft tissue injuries to the face; temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction; and surgical excision of teeth, among other procedures.

Orthopedic Surgery
Our orthopedic surgeons specialize in arthroscopy of the elbow, knee and shoulder, hand surgery, carpal tunnel surgery, sports medicine and other orthopedic procedures. In addition, we perform total joint replacements of the knee and hip, as well as replacement of shoulder joints. We also offer minimally-invasive joint replacements that reduce pain, blood loss and recovery time

Pediatric Surgery
We offer a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient pediatric surgery services.

Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgeons at MetroWest Medical Center perform a number of reconstructive surgeries on abnormal structures of the body caused by birth defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma or injury, infection, tumors or disease to improve function and approximate a normal appearance. In addition, we provide many other plastic surgery services, including breast augmentation and reduction, face lifts, nasal reconstruction, dermabrasion and cleft palate repairs.

Podiatry
Podiatrists at MetroWest Medical Center focus on a wide range of foot and ankle disorders to relieve pain, restore function, and improve foot and ankle health. We perform such procedures as arthroplasty, arthrodesis, bunionectomy, and osteotomy.

Thoracic Surgery
Our Thoracic Surgery program treats a variety of disorders of the lung, airway, and esophagus. Bronchoscopy, minimally-invasive thoracoscopic lung biopsy and lobectomy, pneumonectomy and esophageal surgery are among the procedures offered.

Urology
Our urologists perform surgical procedures to treat a variety of diseases and disorders of the urinary and urogenital organs. Among the procedures we perform are hydrycelectomy, prostatectomy, cystoscopy, transurethral bladder resection, penile implants, cyrogenic destruction of the prostate, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, and vasectomy.

Vascular Surgery
MetroWest vascular surgeons perform a variety of procedures to treat vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, aneurysms, peripheral artery and vascular disease, thrombosis and varicose veins. Among the procedures we perform are angiogram, carotid endarterectomy, angioscopy, aortic and peripheral angioplasty and stenting, and abdominal aortic aneurysm repair by endovascular stent graft.
