Your Weight Loss Options
Weight loss (or bariatric) surgery is a viable option for people who are clinically obese and unsuccessful at losing weight by other more traditional methods. Beyond weight loss, the goal of surgery is to improve health, enhance quality of life, and increase lifespan.
Surgical Options Available
The Weight Management Program at MetroWest Medical Center offers the most successful bariatric surgeries available, including Roux-en Y gastric bypass surgery, Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and Lap-Band surgery. In addition to surgical interventions, our program includes counseling, nutritional guidance, and ongoing support.
Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy
During a Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy the surgeon makes the stomach capacity smaller (about the size of a small banana) by stapling off and removing the outer, stretchy area of the stomach called the fundus. Diabetes management can improve following surgery. There is an average of 50-75% excess weight loss after surgery.
The Lap-Band® System procedure is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure during which an inflatable silicone band is placed around the stomach to create a smaller stomach pouch. Stomach capacity is thereby limited, accelerating the feeling of fullness. The band is adjustable and, if necessary, removable.
Roux-en Y gastric bypass
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass creates a small stomach pouch via surgery that is connected directly to the small intestine, thereby bypassing a portion of the digestive system and limiting calorie intake. Diabetes management often improves dramatically soon after surgery. There is an average of 50-80% excess body weight loss.
