Dr. Diego Illanes
Dr. Diego Illanes uses his three years of fellowship training in urogynecology to help women of all ages deal with incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. “As a urogynecologist, I have the specialized skills to solve these problems and really help women improve their quality of life.”
According to Dr. Illanes, urinary and fecal incontinence as well as pelvic organ prolapse can be caused by a number of factors, including age, repetitive lifting, previous surgery, chronic diseases, childbirth and menopause. Interestingly, women who have never had children can also develop a variety of pelvic floor dysfunctions. “Many women don’t realize how common female pelvic problems, like urinary infections, gas leakage, fecal and urinary incontinence, emptying problems, bladder pain, really are. Whatever the cause, these problems can really interfere with today’s active lifestyles. Fortunately, almost all women can be helped with the right treatment.”
In his practice, Dr. Illanes is a big believer in educating his patients as much as he can. “I always believe that a well-informed patient has a better chance of a good outcome than a patient with very little understanding about what is going on. The female pelvis is very complex and dynamic, that’s one reason I like to sit down with patients and show them visually with graphs and drawings what problem they have and how I can help them.”
Dr. Illanes came to Reliant Medical Group with the idea of being able to offer a personalized and comprehensive multidisciplinary approach to help women with pelvic floor disorders, not just offering surgery but also conservative (non-surgical) options like physical therapy, in-office treatments, biofeedback and pessaries.
Dr. Illanes is board certified in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery (urogynecology). “Today we can utilize a number of minimally invasive procedures, including laparoscopic and vaginal surgery, to help women deal with pelvic floor conditions. These are effective tools that helps the patients recover faster to return to normal day to day activities.”
Dr. Illanes is a Fellow of The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a Fellow of the American College of the Surgeons. In his free time Dr. Illanes enjoys playing and watching soccer and tennis and spending time with his wife and two daughters.
