Framingham, MA – MetroWest Medical Center is pleased to announce the opening of the Advanced Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center, an outpatient facility offering a comprehensive approach to treating patients with non-healing wounds.

The Center is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses and technicians with advanced training in wound care. They follow evidence-based clinical pathways to determine the cause of a wound, including any possible underlying conditions, such as diabetes, that could interfere with the healing process. The team then develops an individualized treatment plan based on that patient’s specific needs.

“I am thrilled to be working with this team of talented medical providers to offer a full complement of services in a state-of-the-art wound center,” says Donald Adams, DPM, FACFAS, CWS. “Providing advanced wound care locally will benefit the many patients in our community who previously needed to travel long distances or were unable to travel to access this level of specialized care.”

The new wound center will offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy, an advanced therapy that promotes healing for select wound types. Therapy is administered in a chamber that delivers 100 percent oxygen with increased atmospheric pressure. The combination of high concentrations of oxygen and increased pressure causes as much as 10 to 15 times the usual amount of oxygen to be dissolved in the blood, which in turn helps deliver more oxygen to the tissues and the rest of the body to promote healing.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is especially beneficial for diabetic patients with non-healing ulcers, non-healing surgical skin flaps and grafts and other types of wounds that fail to respond to conservative therapy. In addition, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a treatment for conditions without open wounds, such as osteomyelitis, radionecrosis and osteoradionecrosis.

“We are pleased to continue bringing advanced care to our community,” says Ava Collins, CEO of MetroWest Medical Center. “The Advanced Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center is a perfect example of how we are ensuring access to needed therapies closer to home.”

The Advanced Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center at MetroWest Medical Center is now open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information about wound care or to schedule an appointment, call 508.383.2190.
