What is General Surgery?

General surgery is a medical discipline that requires a fundamental knowledge of a broad range of topics, such as anatomy, physiology, metabolism, immunology, nutrition, pathology, wound healing, shock and resuscitation, intensive care and neoplasia that are relevant across all surgical specialties.

We practice minimally invasive techniques when appropriate to ensure excellent outcomes and quick recovery time. Our surgeons collaborate with specialists from other areas, including advanced imaging, oncology, and other specialties, to provide you with seamless, multidisciplinary care.

We offer a wide range of surgical procedures, including complex abdominal hernia, inguinal hernia, gastrointestinal, breast, thyroid, and parathyroid procedures.

About Our Day Surgery Program

Our Local Ambulatory Room and Day Surgery Program allow you to have minor surgical services performed during the day, so you can return home the same day.

Before Your Surgery

Before elective surgery at MetroWest Medical Center and MetroWest Physician Services, you’ll have a phone appointment with our Pre-Admission Testing Department. During this call, a nurse will review your health history and discuss important pre- and postoperative care information related to your procedure. Your Pre-Admission Testing appointment will be scheduled at the same time as your surgery.

Please have all of your health information ready including the name and dose of any medications you take. On the day of your procedure, you will also receive a complete pre-operative evaluation from an anesthesiologist who will review your records and answer any questions.
