Nurse Residency Program at MetroWest Medical Center Helps New RNs Navigate Nursing

Nov 18, 2019

Framingham, MA, October 10, 2019 – MetroWest Medical Center implements a Nurse Residency Program designed to help new nurses transition from student to professional nurse. Recently, 2 new grads in the program have been working in the Beautiful Beginnings Birth Center.

The staff at MetroWest Medical Center teach, coach and provide support during the important first year of practice. “Experienced nurses take pride in educating new nurses” says Rosemary Nelson, Director of the Nurse Residency Program. “By doing so, they contribute to the quality of care that will be provided”.

Marissa Troy and Alyssa Wilkinson are registered nurses who graduated from Regis College. They both chose obstetrics as their focus and they both happen to be twins, though they are not siblings to each other. They say this program is preparing them for a long-term career in labor and delivery. “This program is wonderful” says Marissa Troy, who recently finished the program. “The perinatal nurse educator is an excellent mentor. It is intimidating to enter a specialty right out of the gate, but she made the process run smoothly”.

Alyssa Wilkinson always knew she wanted to work in healthcare, but when she came in contact with working nurses, her true passion sparked. “Nursing is one of the unique professions that can shift the focus in healthcare to ‘what’s the matter with you’ to ‘what matters to you’” says Alyssa. Alyssa chose women’s services as a specialty because she and her twin sister were born under difficult circumstances.

The Nurse Residency Program not only helps students enter the workforce, but it helps MetroWest Medical Center build a strong clinical team. “The transition from student nurse to professional nurse can be a challenge, but through this program, nurses are excellently prepared.” says Sandra Harmon, Nursing Director of The Beautiful Beginnings Birth Center. “Our nurse residents are guided by our experienced nurses to deliver expert care to our high risk patients in specialty areas. These new nurses are offered professional mentoring and support through our program, preparing them for their long-term nursing career”.

The Nurse Residency Program takes place twice a year. Interested students can apply to the program by visiting jobs.tenethealth.com/metrowes
